Back-to-School, Back to You: Finding Yourself Again After a Busy Summer
Summer can be such a fun time for families, but let’s be real, it can also be exhausting. Between vacations, activities, playdates, keeping the kids entertained, and trying to keep up with work and everyday responsibilities, parents often spend the entire summer putting everyone else first. When September finally rolls around and the kids head back to school, you might suddenly find yourself with a little more quiet and a little more time to breathe. It can feel like the perfect opportunity to get back into a routine and start focusing on yourself again.
But back-to-school season isn’t always as relaxing as it sounds. New schedules, homework, sports, packed lunches, early mornings, and endless school emails can quickly replace the chaos of summer with a completely different kind of stress. You may even realize that somewhere between taking care of everyone else, you stopped checking in with yourself. This is a great time to ask: What do I need right now? Maybe it’s getting back into an exercise routine, spending time with friends, enjoying your coffee while it’s actually hot, setting better boundaries, or simply having an hour where nobody needs anything from you.
Finding yourself again doesn’t have to mean making huge changes or adding another item to your already full to-do list. Start small. Give yourself permission to rest, make time for something you enjoy, and pay attention to how you’re feeling emotionally. And if the transition into a new season has you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, burned out, or simply unlike yourself, therapy can provide a space that is just for you. The kids may be heading back to school, but this season can be a fresh start for you, too.
